While most retailers are closed in India, food retailers like Big Bazaar have stayed open to serve daily esssentials to shoppers. However, most of supermarket frontline staff went to their hometowns when the lockdown began. The other brave staff who wanted to continue working had to travel long distances to reach work and many couldn’t get public transport and In some cases were forced by authorities / vigilantes not to travel. Food retailers were reporting staff attendance under 20% and large shopping populations waiting outside stores to be served, at a snail’s pace due to “social distancing norms” followed at stores. As a result, various retail industry captains came forward to offer their staff to supermarkets and even help competitors and Bata offered their staff to Big Bazaar.
